Authentic living only comes from within and can only come about when your actions and values match. When you find yourself on a fixed routine that prevents you from pursuing the things you truly want to, you are likely to become unhappy. The worst of all, it could mean not living the life you were meant to live. If you want to be true to yourself, you must live genuinely.

What is authentic living?

According to existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, authenticity is essential to live a free and fulfilling life. When you live an authentic life, you listen to that inner voice in your head. You know what you are and what you want.

Rather than ignoring your intuition that you’re in a dead-end job that doesn’t give you joy, you should look for ways to make your life more suited to your values. You could be able to do this by switching to a better job, volunteering in your community, or associating with people who share your beliefs.

To achieve this, it is important to be mindful of one’s own nature in addition to those of others. In this regard, Joseph writes Authentic: How to Be Yourself and Why It Matters. As humans, we obviously want to adhere to our own nature, but it can be challenging to discern the needs of others as well as our own.

We will work to fulfill our every need in a positive and encouraging atmosphere so that we can thrive.

What are the benefits of authentic living?

Authentic living is an ongoing process, not a destination. It may lead to what psychologists call eudaimonia, which is typically used to refer to happiness.

Having happiness and enjoying life often encourages individuals to take on other tasks. For example, taking things slow, volunteering, being mindful, showing appreciation, donating to charity, and participating in strenuous activities are all excellent ways to spend one’s time.

These studies suggest that these activities might even be good for one’s health.

5 Ways to live an authentic life

When it comes to healthy living, here are five ways to get started today:

1. Define your values

If you want a real life, the first step is to find out what’s important to you. You may hold onto the values you grew up with. While that’s not a problem, it’s important to bear in mind that these values may reflect a different you. After all, people change, and you may discover that your values have changed as well.

Find some time to meditate, reflect, and write entries in your journal. Alternatively, spend some quiet time in nature, which can help reduce stress and improve your focus.

Alternatively, what frustrates you about others’ behavior? Is there a social justice issue you care about? Answering these questions can lead you to discovering what is most important to you.

2. Keep an open mind

It is important to stay open-minded for life is an ongoing process. You shouldn’t close yourself off to new experiences. Tell your inner critic to cease and desist. Do not judge yourself or be harsh on yourself for past or present errors. Exercise compassion for others, but first take care of yourself. We can be our own worst critics.

Being open-minded also means being accepting of new ideas, experiences, and people. That doesn’t mean you have to compromise your principles, however. True heroes live by moral principles but are always willing to consider new information. For instance, perhaps you are dining with a friend who is very enthusiastic about physics.

You may not care about physics, and you may even find it boring. I know I do. Being genuine means listening to and paying attention to what your companion tells you, regardless of your personal opinion on the matter.

3. Be honest with yourself

If you want to truly be genuine, be truthful. Are you living a life that is genuine to you? Express yourself and feel free to say what you want to say, even if it’s coming from an honest place. Dig deep within yourself. Being genuine also means being a profound thinker and translating your deepest thoughts to others around you.

My dad is a great example of someone who is totally genuine. He will take a long time to choose what shirt to wear or what to eat. But when he chooses, he knows it is the one he needs and the one that will also benefit others.

Instead of ordering only himself something to eat, he will order me something he likes, too. Be mindful of your thoughts and actions. Being honest may be frightening, but it is essential for living a fulfilling life.

4. Be humble and treat people kindly

Being genuine is also about being humble and considerate to others. Be proud of your achievements but be thankful for the opportunities you also had. Appreciate thankfulness and thank the people who have helped you achieve your goals or are currently helping you get to where you want to be.

A true person treats others with respect and shows gratitude. One of my friends and colleagues treats everybody equally. She is kind not only to her friends and coworkers but also to service personnel.

She will thank the hotel’s receptionist or greet a homeless person on the street to give them food. She may ask them about their day as well. I have seen firsthand how her reality shines through others and brightens up their day. She truly understands the value of authentic living.

5. Trust your intuition

Lastly, follow your instinct. Listen to your gut, which will tell you to call a friend or make contact with a long-lost relative. That is the route to authenticity. Be more aware of yourself and recognize your goals and desires. Becoming more aware of how others feel can also help increase your understanding of others.

Intuition is more than just an inner voice. It can help you understand the present moment, allowing you to be in the present. As Dennis Merritt Jones, author of Your Redefining Moments: Becoming Who You Were Born to Be, says: “Your intuition is the very still voice arising from the true self.” Your inner voice will guide you to true living and help you define yourself.

Authentic living is a great approach to life!

Authentic living is the best way to be content and fulfilled. When you’re genuine, your basic needs are fulfilled, you feel content, and you lead a vibrant life. It’s a challenge to maintain your personality while also breaking free from any defenses you developed as a child.

Your inner beauty and authenticity contribute to your surroundings, as your voice changes everything around you for the better. In the process, you and your family’s lives will change in a positive way as well. So listen. Listen to yourself, your values, and your intuition, and learn to live your life as your true self.
